Music Paper

? This is an open book examination, which means that the exam is not a test of your memory, but rather an opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge and mastery of the course materials and your ability to analyze and synthesize this information. Use all resources that you need.
? For each topic, write an organized and thoughtful essay of 500 words. Your grade will be determined by 1) how well you respond to the topic; 2) clarity of organization and expression; 3) use of ample documentation, quotations, and examples drawn from the course materials; 4) correctness of grammar and spelling.
? When you cite a source, put the source in parentheses after the citation?for example: (Text, p.25) or (CD ?Scotland the Brave?) or (Video Program 2)
? Submit the entire exam as one document?not separate essays.

Develop three essays. Each essay should be 500 words.

ESSAY 1 should focus on a single piece of music from the CDs. ANALYZE the musical selection according to important musical concepts and ideas covered in UNITS 7, 8, 9, 10, 11. Be sure to focus on central and significant concepts from the textbook (Exploring the world of music 2nd Edition) and you should also have references from videos (http://www.learner.org/resources/series105.html). Your grade depends on your analysis of how the musical selection demonstrates the concepts of music that are discussed in these units. For each unit discussed in the essay, you must have at least one citation from each of the required course sources: text, CD, video. HOWEVER, more than one from each source is highly recommended. (Use Symphony No. 5 in C minor by Beethoven)

ESSAY 2: select a second piece of music from the CDs and follow the instructions for essay 1. (Use Scotland the Brave)

ESSAY 3: listen to the following excerpt from Tchaikovski?s Piano Concert to #1 and follow the instructions for essay 1 AND additionally include some outside research on the piece of music. Be sure you give citations for this research.

*IMPORTANT* Use ONLY the sources that I have provided
textbook (Exploring the world of music 2nd Edition)
videos (http://www.learner.org/resources/series105.html).

For example: Essay 1 could focus on ?We Shall Overcome? and Essay 2 could focus on ?Beethoven?s Fifth Symphony.? Essay 3 will be a piece of music that is not part of the course.

Write (and edit!) management comments for the following scenario in which you play the role of an external auditor

2. Write (and edit!) management comments for the following scenario in which you play the role of an external auditor. You recently conducted an audit for Viking Recreational Equipment (VRE), which manufactures snowmobiles, skis, and other high-end outdoors equipment. During your audit, you observed a problem with VREвЂTMs billing procedures. Even though their billing statements clearly state that they will charge their customers (mostly retail stores) 5% for payments overdue for 90 days, they only occasionally add this charge to the customer accounts. As a result, you estimate that they have lost over $200,000 in revenue in FY17. Late payments have also increased over the past three fiscal years, from 6% to 13%, causing a cash flow problem, especially in the second quarter of the year.

When you mentioned this problem to VikingвЂTMs accountant, Martin McDonald, he said that adding the late charge took too much staff time and, more importantly, irritated their customers. “Better to be paid late than not at all,вЂк said Martin over a cup of coffee in his office. Still, you think you need to include this observation in your management letter comments.

Write your comments using the components in exercise 1 above, but write your comment using paragraphs. Organize your comments in the form that makes the most sense for the condition, but place your recommendation at the end. Supply any details as needed. Assume that your audience consists of the CEO and upper-level management at VRE.

3. Write (and edit!) management comments for the following scenario in which you play the role of an internal auditor for Golden Development, Inc. (GDI), which builds hotels, apartment complexes, and other large commercial buildings. GDI buys building materials from suppliers around the globe at large-volume prices. During your internal audit of GDI, you noticed that some specialized wood products from Brazil had jumped in price by 75% during FY18. At first, you thought that this increase may have resulted from a record-keeping error, but further checking verified the price hike, which has resulted in millions of dollars of cost over-runs on projects across the country.

When you mentioned this problem to GDIвЂTMs VP of Purchasing, Matt Jones, he indicated that increasing demand for these wood products, along with their limited supply, had caused the increases. However, his chief international buyer, Sue Reynolds, told you a different story—that several other suppliers were available but that Matt refused to do business with them, claiming that other suppliers created problems with logistics and currency fluctuations. After further checking, youвЂTMve learned that these are minor problems relative to the steep rise in costs.

Write your comments using the components in exercise 1 above, but write your comment using paragraphs. Organize your comments in the form that makes the most sense for the condition, but place your recommendation at the end. Supply any details as needed. Assume that your audience consists of the CEO and upper-level management at GDI.
